Why Gymnastic Grips Are Key for CrossFit—and Which Ones You’ll Love.

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about gymnastic grips recently. Why do we use them and which ones they should buy, So I wanted to give some guidance!

CrossFit is no joke when it comes to wear and tear on your hands. Constant bar work leaves your palms sore, and that’s where gymnastic grips come in. They’re not just a safety net; they’re a grip boost that keeps you going harder and longer. Let’s break down two standout options from Reyllen (These are the ones I use every day)Panda Grips and Merlin Grips—and why they’ll change your game.

Why Rock Gymnastic Grips in CrossFit?

Grips are a great boost for all athletes. They up the friction, meaning you’re not wasting energy trying to hang on. And, when used correctly can help you hang on to the bar for high rep sets. They can also help to protect your hands from rips and tears.

Which Grips should I choose?

I have two different grips that I use for different reasons.

Both are from Reyllen Grips: Panda and Merlin

1. Panda Grips – Chalk me up!

These grips are fantastic on a rougher bar. Coat them in chalk (the more the better, seriously! Just the whole bucket), flip them over and you will stick to that bar! Soft, yet tough, Panda Grips meld to your hands without feeling clunky. Adjust them quickly, and they’re good to go for anything from pull-ups to muscle-ups.

  • Key Features: Soft feel, quick to adjust, ideal for everyday workouts

2. Merlin Grips – Serious Grip, Made for Intensity

If the bar is smooth and slippery and you want serious traction, Merlin Grips have a textured finish that keeps you locked in. They’re a bit thicker than the Panda Grips, giving extra padding for intense sets, and they’re solid on the bar when you need it most. BUT AVOID CHALK. Make sure the bar is wiped down and your grips are powder free.

  • Key Features: Textured surface, extra padding, stays firm on the bar

Quick Tips to Maximize Your Grips

  • Chalk right: A little goes a long way—just enough chalk on your hands and grips adds the perfect grip boost.

  • Break them in: Let them settle into your hands with lighter sessions before you hit those big lifts.

  • Keep ‘em fresh: Store grips in a cool, dry spot to keep them ready for the next round.
